ZAI [Pty] Ltd were appointed as lead architects, in association with three architectural practices, in 2003 to design and deliver the extension to the existing facility over a four year period. ZAI’s scope of work also included full civil engineering services.
The new arena accommodates 6000 spectators for sporting events and 10 000 spectators for concert events and 25 000 sqm of net exhibition space. Operable walls enable the arena space to be subdivided to accommodate a range of different layout configurations. The urban design brief responds to the strategic concept of an active 'African Square', an iconic gathering space that showcases the building, strengthens the relationships to other city experiences and promotes small business opportunities.
